Maui Catches the Sun. Week Ending: 14.07.17

Hello,

We have had a fantastic time performing our Maui Catches the Sun performance. We have had amazing feedback! We loved it!

This morning our school Governor Mrs Robertson came into Year 2 to do some STEM activities with us. We had to make a raft to see which raft held the most marbles. We also made jelly bean towers using cocktail sticks and we tried to make them as stable as possible.

This afternoon Year 2 had a fun treat outside where we got lots of the PE equipment out and played with our friends.

On Thursday we went to visit our new class. We are looking forward to becoming Year 3 children in September.

This week in English we wrote a setting description for either a town or country as we read Town Mouse and Country Mouse.

Home Learning this week is to practise your lines for the leavers assembly.

Star of the Week is going to EVERYONE in Chestnut Class for their outstanding performance and hard work! Well done team Chestnut Class!

Well done to Charlotte for being a supportive friend and for always being ready for her learning.

During Topic this week we've been getting messy as we've been designing and making clay buildings that represent Redbourn High Street.

In PSHE we had a discussion about what harms the environment and what helps the environment. We can all do our bit by not wasting water or electricity, putting rubbish in the bin and we could walk to school.

On Tuesday the Air Ambulance helicopter landed on our school field it was very exciting!

Mr Hairon visited Chestnut Class on Thursday to read a story to us.

Tomorrow it is the Strawberry Fayre, it starts at 11am and finishes at 2pm. Please come and join us and you will be able to buy your bug wind chime. Maypole dancing will be taking place at 1pm. The year 2 children will meet at the bottom of the ramp at 12:30. See you there!

Historians. Week ending: 9.6.17

Hello,

During English and History this week we have become historians as we had to read and record facts in our own words about the history of Redbourn Village. Did you know Redbourn High Street used to be known as the 'Street of Inns' because it had 25 pubs and inns.

This week we said goodbye to Joshua. We hope he has fun at his new school.

In RE we found out about the Jewish leader Moses. We then came up with ideas for our own 10 Commandments.

We had great fun in maths doing a number experiment. We wanted to find out if you add 2 odd numbers together if it will create another odd number. We worked systematically like this:

1+1= 2
1+3= 4
1+5= 6
1+7= 8
1+9= 10

By the end we found out that 2 odd numbers added together equal an even number. We tested this rule with 2 digit numbers as well.
11 + 11=  22
11 + 13= 24
11+ 15= 26

This weekend Snowy will be spending time with Michael for his brilliant positive attitude towards his learning.

Well done to Oliver who received our Star Award for always working hard and persevering with his learning.

Home Learning this weekend is to design your own Roald Dahl character.

Don't forget to fill in your questionnaire and return it to Chestnut Class as soon as possible!!

Have a good weekend! 😊

Percy the park keeper fun! Week Ending: 19.5.17

Hello,

This week we have been showing off our maths skills by answering lots of different questions in our own special booklets.

Today during PSHE we did a germ experiment. We placed glitter on our hands then we gave our friend a high five to see how easily germs can spread. It is important to wash your hands before you eat, after you have been to the toilet and after playing outside.

In English we wrote a character description plan and a character description about Percy the park keeper.
Percy wears big, black boots when he is outside playing in the puddles. He is kind and gentle to the animals as when they are hurt he looks after them.

During computing we used the programme Microsoft Excel to input data about the suspects linked to the missing cake. Then we sent a class email to Mrs McLellan explaining who we thought it might be.

Well done to Olly who is Star of the Week for making good choices. Congratulations to Theo who will be spending the weekend with Snowy our Learning Owl for being a great team player.

Have a good weekend.

Friday 17 March 2017

DT Week! Week Ending: 17/3/17

In Year 2 we have had a DT Week. We labelled the parts of a vehicle, like the chassis, axle, axle holders, wheels and body.

Then we drew a design for our own vehicles.

The best bit was making the vehicle. We used junk moddeling to create the body. Please continue to bring in boxes as we will be finishing these off next week.

During English we became authors. We listened to the story 'Were Going on a Bear Hunt'. We used these ideas to create our own story of 'We're Going on an Elephant Hunt'.

Today our lines were sent home so we can practise these over the weekend ready for our sharing assembly next Friday.

Today we had a Colourful Day at school as our topic is Kaleidoscope.

Don't forget tonight is Film Night.

A Great Week! Week Ending: 10.3.17

In Maths this week we have been doing the inverse of multiplication which is division. We have used sharing strategies and arrays to solve division number sentences and division word problems.

This week in English we read the story 'The Hunter'. Then we wrote a setting description and our challenge was to include expanded noun phrases and adverbs.

The blue, shimmering river was calm under the red, hot sun. Jamina splashed happily in the cool river.

During PSHE we created mind maps and posters about road safety.
"At traffic lights the red man means stop and wait." Kara
" When you cross the road you need to hold an adults hand." Charlotte
" You should always look left and right before crossing a road." Theo.

Congratulations to Ciara who will be taking home Snowy our learning owl. This week Ciara took the time to teach another friend in Chestnut Class how to skip.

Well done to Edrich for being a kind and caring friend.

Book Week and Maths Problem Solving Week. Week ending: 3.3.17

What a busy week we have had!

It has been great fun celebrating Book Week! Our focus has been fantasy so we designed our own fantasy settings and made a character head band. We then became authors as we wrote our own fantasy stories.

On Wednesday we went over the the Juniors and met the author Jeremy Strong. He was very funny and told us how he gets his ideas for his story writing. He writes his stories in his shed at the bottom of his garden.

For Maths Problem Solving Week we have been focusing on multiplication. We have used arrays and mental calculations to help us problem solve. We have spoken lots about using the most efficient strategy for us.

Multiplication can be done in any order, this means it is commutative.

For example:

3 x 5 = 15
5 x 3 = 15

An array for 5 x 3 would look like this

1*****
2*****
3*****

In Science we tested and timed how long it took different sized parachutes to reach the ground. We recorded our data in a table.

Congratulations to Leyton who will be spending the weekend with Snowy our Learning Owl. Leyton always has a positive attitude towards his learning and is eager to challenge himself.

Well done to Oliver.C who is our Star of the Week for taking responsibility for his learning.

Don't forget to let your class teacher know if your grown ups will be attending Curriculum Hour on Tuesday evening 7.30 - 8.30.

Home Learning- research the history of the push bike. Record in your own way.

Have a good weekend!

Trip to Waddesdon Manor

Hello,

This week, we went to Waddesdon Manor for our fantastic school trip. It linked to our Kaleidoscope topic because we were looking for patterns and colours in nature.
I liked seeing the birds because we heard them speak and could see how pretty they are - Lexi
I enjoyed the activities we did especially colouring in pictures that told the stories of Sleeping Beauty - Leyton
I found out that they have to keep the rooms in the house dark so the colours don't fade away - Hollie

In English, we have been learning about recounts. We looked at some to identify the different features of a recount.
They have an introduction and a concluding paragraph - Holly
You need to use the "Five Ws", what, when, who, where, why - Simeon
We use time conjunctions like first, next and finally - Olivia
We used these skills to write a recount of our trip.

In maths, we have been adding and subtracting 1 and 10 to different numbers. Some of us used Diennes and some of us were trying to do it mentally.

In topic, we were comparing Antarctica and the desert.
There are more animals in Antarctica - Sharon
The desert is the hottest place in the world - Trudie
Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth - Oliver
In the desert, there are spiders, camels, lions and lizards - Ollie
Camels have 2 layers of eyelashes to keep the sand out - Charlotte

This week, Kara has got the Star Award for being kind and caring to others. Well done, Kara.

Well done to Alex for being our Learning Owl this week. He has shown independence and really challenged himself when he wrote his recount. Have a great weekend with Snowy, Alex!

Next week is Book Week...

Safer Internet Day. Week Ending: 9.02.17

In Maths we have been learning about data.  We created our own tally chart and bar charts to show our favourite colours.  We used the computers to create our bar charts.

Tuesday was Safer Internet Day.  We discussed how to stay safe online.  We have learnt not to share any personal information online and to talk to an adult if we see something that makes us feel uncomfortable.  We designed our own ‘Stay Safe Online’ posters.

Yesterday, we took a walk to St. Mary’s Church.  We saw Rev. Will and Rev. Tim.  They told us all about St. Mary’s Church and what they do.  We learnt that the church is the oldest building in Redbourn and it is 907 years old.  Rev Will also explained to us that the stained glass windows tell a story.  One of them has Saint Alban in the window.

In Topic we have been creating our own weather chart for the week.  Every morning this week, we have checked the internet for the weather forecast and completed our own charts.  We have seen a forecast that it may snow in Redbourn on Saturday!

Finally, we wrote our own stories in Creative Writing.  We used props to help us plan our stories – a cape, a key, a box and a crown.
Well done to Joshua this week for getting Star of the week for his risk taking and positive attitude.

We are looking forward to having a break over this half term,

Friday 3 February 2017

NSPCC Number Day. Week Ending: 03.02.17

Today we came to school wearing a number because it is NSPCC number day. We have been using our problem solving skills. Take a look at some of our photos.

This week during our English learning we have been coming up with adjectives and expanded noun phrases to describe colours. We thought about different colours and used these within a poem. We came up with this poem as a class.

Red is like a hot, blazing sunset.
Red smells like burning fire.
Red is for lava.

Blue looks like the wide, dark sea.
Blue is like an ice cube melting on a plate.
Blue tastes like a big, juicy blueberry.

Yellow feels like the burning, warm sun.
Yellow is the custard on my crumble.
Yellow is the sound of buzzing, bumble bees.

In Topic this week we have been thinking about the weather. We discussed what a weather chart needed to include so that next week we can record the weather and the temperature in Redbourn.

Home Learning this week is to collect data on a topic of your choice, like favourite sport / colour or animal. Then use that data to create a tally chart / bar graph or pictograph. This will help you as next week in maths we will be learning how to read statistics and data.

Well done to Charlotte who is our Star of the Week for being a supportive talk partner. Charlotte has demonstrated fantastic communication skills.

This weekend Snowy will be going home with Holly because Holly has impressed Snowy with her independence and risk taking skills.

Next Wednesday Year 2 will be walking down to St. Mary's church to find out about why a church is a special place for Christians. Please make sure your child has a warm coat to wear that day.

Don't forget tonight is the school disco!

See you there!

Friday 27 January 2017

Story Teller. Week Ending: 27.01.17

Hello,

In English this week we used similar themes and ideas from the story 'The Blue Coat'.
Leyton- "Mine was called The Golden Jacket"
Ollie- "Mine was called The Golden Waistcoat"
Bella- "My story was called The Purple Dress"
"In the story there was some repeated phrases" Alex
The piece of clothing kept getting smaller and smaller. It started as coat, then it turned into a jacket, then a hat, then a bow tie, then a button and then the final gift was a story.

During dance we practised the next part of our dance routine. It is coming together well! Some of us brought our umbrellas from home to use during our dance.

This week we had a special visitor called Ian. He was a story teller and he told us the story of a lazy boy called Tom.

In RE we have been talking about special places of worship. We discussed what we might see in a church and what Christians do at church.

Well done to Bella who is our Star of the Week for being a caring buddy.

Snowy will be spending the weekend with Joshua as Joshua has really been challenging himself with his maths learning.

On Wednesday we had another special visitor.... Mrs Carey came to see us! She told us all about her school and was impressed with our learning.

The Gruffalo... what's a Gruffalo? Week Ending: 13.01.17

Hello,

This week we have welcomed Charlotte into Chestnut Class.

In Dance this half term we are going to be learning a sequence of movements to 'Singing in the Rain'. If you have an umbrella at home that you would like to bring in you can, as we will be using this as a prop within our dance.

This week we became authors as we retold the story of 'The Gruffalo'. Before we did this we thought of some adjectives to describe the characters and we also sequenced pictures from the story.

We have been showing off our maths skills this week by using lots of different strategies to help us to answer maths questions.

We became scientists as we explored kaleidoscopes in science. " First we looked through a kaleidoscope, then we had one mirror and we made a pattern. Then Mrs McLellan gave us two mirrors and then we wrote about it in our books" Theo.
"We got a piece of paper and put some sequins on it and then we got one mirror and looked in the mirror. Then we got another mirror which made it look like there were lots of mirrors." Teddy

This afternoon in PSHE we were thinking about special people and why they are special to us.

Congratulations to Grace who will be taking home Snowy our Learning Owl for always be ready for her learning and her fantastic listening skills!

Well done to Teddy who is our Star of the Week for taking care of his classroom.
